ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Rochester Grizzlies 2025–26 captain, Cooper Johnson, has announced his commitment to Midland University (ACHA Division I) to continue his hockey and academic career.
in 41 games this season with the Grizzlies, Johnson has totaled 12 goals and 32 points in 41 games, smashing his statline of three goals and three assists from last season.
The Waterloo, Iowa, native led the Des Moines Buccaneers 16U AAA with 37 points in 2021-2022 and spent time with the Oakmoor Academy Patriots 18U AAA in 2023-2024, snagging eight goals and 41 points with the squad.
Currently sitting at No. 22 in the latest ACHA MD1 rankings, Midland University has been a top-tier ACHA Division 1 program, making the ACHA Tournament in 2025 and frequently competing in national championships.
The forward marks the 53rd official Grizzlies college commitment, and the 10th ever to commit to an ACHA D1 school, showcasing Rochester’s knack for developing talent throughout their organization’s 8 year history.
Coach Brandon Ratzloff said this about the Grizzlies Captain; “Midland is getting an outstanding player on the ice and an even better human being off it. Cooper has consistently shown great leadership during his time with the Grizzlies and brings an attitude that elevates everyone around him. We’re incredibly proud of his development over his two-year career with the Grizzlies organization and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at the collegiate level.“
We asked Cooper why he chose Midland University, and he said “Midland has become sort of a hotbed for Grizzlies players over the last couple of years with Joycer and Leo going there, so I’ve been able to follow the program pretty closely. I’m familiar with the team and the coaches, and I’ve liked the culture they’ve built there. It feels like a great fit for me both on and off the ice, and I’m excited for the opportunity to keep developing there as a player and as a person.“
