Grizzlies weather the storm, sweep Cyclones in Central Division Semi-Finals

ROCHESTER, Minn. – After a regular-season series split down the middle at four games apiece, the Rochester Grizzlies had the final say against the Wausau Cyclones, eliminating them from playoff contention for the second consecutive season.

In front of a raucous crowd at the Rec Center on Friday night, the Grizzlies proved that their offensive surge over the final stretch of the regular season was no fluke, erupting for seven goals to take Game 1 of the Central Division Semifinals.

Four of those seven tallies came on the power play, including two markers from Mason Decker, whose 43rd goal of the season set a new Grizzlies franchise record.

Marty Raymond’s squad finished the night 4-for-5 on the man advantage, capitalizing on nearly every Wausau mistake to keep the game just out of reach.

The Cyclones battled back throughout the night, tying the game at one and eventually chipping away to make it a 4–3 contest in the third period.

However, back-to-back penalties proved costly for Wausau, leading to two quick Rochester power-play goals that sealed the Game 1 victory.

The depth of the Grizzlies proved to be the downfall of the Cyclones in the opener, something the Rochester coaching staff has praised heavily since the Trade Deadline.

Knowing Wausau would come out swinging with its season on the line in Game 2, the Grizzlies delivered arguably their most complete performance of the season.

Domination from start to finish is the only way to describe it.

Rochester scored six goals while stifling nearly every Cyclone offensive opportunity, skating away with a 6–0 victory and a series sweep Saturday night in Wausau.

Decker picked up right where he left off after his four-point performance in Game 1, opening the scoring just 3:23 into the game as the Grizzlies grabbed early control and never looked back.

After outshooting the Cyclones 20–4 in the first period, Rochester continued to pour it on, scoring three more goals in the second period to take a commanding 5–0 lead into the final frame.

With a goal on Saturday, Dominic Arndt extended his goal streak to three games and his point streak to four, dating back to the regular-season finale against St. Louis.

The relentless forecheck and defensive structure from the Grizzlies frustrated the Cyclones all night. Wausau finished the game with 56 penalty minutes and was forced to kill off nine penalties, a complete reversal from the last time these two teams met in Wausau, when Rochester spent nine trips in the sin bin.

Rochester capitalized twice on the power play, extending an impressive special teams streak. The Grizzlies have now scored a power-play goal in each of their last 12 games when given the opportunity, converting at a 43.5 percent clip during that stretch.

Meanwhile, Nick Kurtiak quietly delivered a stellar performance between the pipes. The netminder turned aside all 21 shots he faced to secure his first shutout of the season, finishing the year with a 3–1 record against the Cyclones.

With the sweep complete, Rochester now turns its attention to West Bend in a rematch of last season’s Central Division Final, with the Grizzlies looking to exact revenge and punch their ticket to the franchise’s third Fraser Cup appearance.
