Meers, Mahony Lead Grizzlies Past Mustangs 7-1

Oct 1, 2021

ROCHESTER, MN- On a night meant to honor past Grizzlies teams, the current team did not disappoint.

With the likes of Matt DeRosa, Peyton Hart, Joey Fodstad, Porter Haney, and more in attendance, the Rochester Grizzlies came away with a big 7-1 win over the visiting Peoria Mustangs. Two newcomers in Austin Meers and Connor Mahony each scored two goals while Luke Morrisette added his first career NA3HL goal, as well.

The game did not start off the way Rochester would’ve hoped. Peoria veteran Ethan Chesney intercepted a pass attempt and then beat goalie Zach Wiese on a breakaway to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That lead would last about 10 minutes as the Grizzlies managed to find their game. Morrisette would beat Mustang’s goalie Joe Ambroffi from the high slot to tie the game at one apiece. With 1:08 to go in the first, Meers would get his first of the game after finishing off a Cole Gibson pass on a two-on-one.
Rochester would start to find its game in the second period as Meers would get his second of the game at 6:13 of the period, extending the lead to 3-1. Just over a minute later, Mahony would tally his first of the game to make it 4-1 for the home team. Mahony has scored in each of his two games since joining the Grizzlies from the Minnesota Magicians of the NAHL.
Mahony would get his second early in the third period on the power play to make it 5-1 Grizzlies. Kyle Brown and Kade Shea added late goals for Rochester to finish it off.
Zach Wiese stopped 23 of 24 shots on net for the Grizzlies. Meers and Mahony each finished with two goals and an assist while Per Waage had quite the game, picking up four assists.
The Grizzlies and Mustangs are back at it Saturday evening at 7:05 from the Rochester Recreation Center. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
